Pier 400 expands Clean Truck Express lanes as Amazon increases electric fleet

APM Terminals Los Angeles, Pier 400, is adding a second unique “Clean Truck Express” lane. This comes as a regular customer at the terminal, Amazon, announced it will increase add 50 heavy duty electric trucks to its fleet in Southern California – making it the largest fleet of these vehicles in the country.

Amazon is just one of the forward-thinking carriers to make use of Pier 400’s Clean Truck Express lane, originally launched in December and the first and only lane of its kind in or around the harbor.

Last month, the clean truck express gate-in lane saved an average 18 minute in-gate cue and users experience an average truck turn time of 30 minutes or less. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the priority lane has proved popular, with over 1,200 trucks making use of the facility in April alone – a 57% increase compared to March.

Cutting truck turn times – and emissions

The benefits of the initiative go beyond time savings. The terminal prioritises and encourages the use of vehicles registered by the Port of Los Angeles Clean Truck Program, powered by battery electric, natural gas or other zero emission technologies that benefit the local community by reducing tail pipe pollution.

Among the customers benefitting from the priority lane are Amazon, which introduced its new fleet of electric trucks on Tuesday. APM Terminals welcomed Amazon to the Clean Truck Express community and celebrate their efforts in the fight for cleaner air.

Charging up

In February this year Pier 400 introduced 28 all-electric passenger vehicles to its own fleet, and installed numerous publicly accessible charging points.

Pier 400 is among five terminals taking part in APM Terminals’ global electrification pilot aimed at accelerating decarbonisation in port equipment.
