APM Terminals Moín accelerates modernisation to improve efficiency
As part of its broader strategy to improve port performance and customer experience, APM Terminals Moín in Costa Rica has launched a broad modernisation project focused on streamlining access to the terminal. The initiative, which began in April 2025, is taking place during the country’s low import and export season to minimise trade disruption.
The project includes the redevelopment of the terminal’s main access point, with improvements aimed at increasing speed and control in land-side operations. The upgrades include:
- Construction of new control booths
- Installation of traffic management systems, sensors and biometric validation tools
- Implementation of secondary inspection lanes using advanced screening technology
- Development of a new return lane to facilitate smooth reentry to National Route 257
These improvements will replace the current system, which relies on a fixed verification station for container appointments and driver documentation. By integrating automation and real-time validation tools, the terminal can improve throughput while maintaining safety for personnel and cargo.

A commitment to sustainability
This access modernisation project also forms part of a wider commitment by APM Terminals Moín to upgrade its operational infrastructure and implement sustainable technologies. During last year and this year, the terminal has introduced:
- Digitalisation of access and container data, reducing administrative bottlenecks and increasing reliability
- Electrification of Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, supporting APM Terminals’ decarbonisation targets
- Smart STS OCR technology, ensuring precise container identification during loading and discharging
- Twistlock control upgrades for safer and more efficient container handling
- Non-intrusive scanning technology, available to customs authorities to improve inspection without delaying cargo
- Strengthening LTE network coverage, ensuring reliable communication between connected equipment
- Network infrastructure migration and device upgrades, improving the digital backbone of terminal operations
- Pregate construction, easing traffic flow and reducing congestion at the terminal’s entrance
- Truck alignment systems under cranes, for faster and more precise container transfers
“This project marks a critical step forward in our modernisation journey,” says José Rueda, Managing Director of APM Terminals Moín. “By upgrading our infrastructure and integrating smart technologies, we are increasing our responsiveness, improving safety and delivering a better experience for customers and transport operators”.
To ensure a seamless rollout, APM Terminals Moín is also engaging with shipping lines and trucking companies through dedicated information sessions. These meetings keep stakeholders informed about the project’s scope, expected timelines and the interim measures being taken to ensure continuous operations.
